Decorating a Small Space

People live in small spaces for all kinds of reasons. Some people live in multiple places for work, have temporary homes or rooms to stay in, or might prefer living minimally. No matter the case, decorating a small space is a fun challenge that requires a fine balance. Here’s how to develop a keen eye for decorating your small space.

Use space directionally

If you plan to use decorative shelving and storage ideas, it’s best to think about using the space vertically against the wall moving upwards in the room. This will keep everything against the wall with nothing jutting out. It’s also a great way to creatively open up a small space. A chalkboard organizer or a wall-mounted wine rack are just a couple of ideas to consider when using space directionally.

Take advantage of mirrors

Mirrors are great for creating an illusion of space. They also offer a really unique way of decorating walls – especially if you decide to mix and match your mirrors according to size and design. This idea works particularly well in small bathrooms and kitchens. Double the space in your room with a collection of interesting pieces!

Use neutral colours

Dark colours can be a little too overpowering in a small space. Using nudes, pastels and other neutral colours are a great way to increase light in small areas of a home or small apartments. Collectively, neutral coloured walls, furniture items and decorations are a great way to unify your décor.

Install wall-mounted lighting

Lighting is so important to a small space. It can orient the room, set the mood and play with or against your décor. If you have a small space, you should consider lighting options that are wall-mounted rather than lamps that could take up floor space or table lamps that may run the risk of creating clutter. You can even opt for a hanging lantern to change things up!

You can do a lot more than you think with a small space. It just takes a keen eye and some will power to put together the right décor. Pick items that reflect your sensibilities, that invoke calmness and make you feel good. There are so many ways to decorate a room, but you may as well make your space completely yours!
